Driving Tips for Driving in Namibia

  • All drivers must have a valid driving license.
  • Always drive on the left-hand side of the road.
  • Avoid continues long distance driving, due to lack of concentration.
  • Switch on headlamps to make you visible to on-coming traffic.
  • Pay attention to all road traffic signs.
  • Minimize driving during night-time. Wildlife visibility is poor and dangerous at night.
  • Be alert during rainy and wet conditions, the road surfaces might be slippery. DO NOT drive through rivers when you are not sure how deep it is.
  • Always be on the lookout for wildlife and animals that graze near the road. Reduce speed when approaching them.
  • All passengers in the vehicle must wear seatbelts.
  • When travelling through remote areas make sure to have enough water with you.
  • Always have a first aid kit in the vehicle.
  • Check your air pressure of all wheels every day. Make sure of the correct air pressure for the road surface and the amount of load in the vehicle.
  • Check oil and water levels when re-fueling.
  • Plan your trip carefully and make sure you have enough fuel till your next stop.
  • Never pick-up hitch hikers and don’t leave your valuables in the vehicle.

Speed Limits

  • 60 km/h in Urban areas on Tarred Roads
  • 100km/h outside Urban areas on Gravel Road

          (Suggest to drive 80km/h)

  • 120km/h outside Urban areas on Tarred Roads
